As for the media reports on possible child labor and substandard wages, letââ¬â¢s recall an old newspaper saying: ââ¬Å"Never pick fights with anyone who buys ink by the barrel. â⬠That is, as a CEO, I would not pick fights with the media, but to act promptly, discuss the issue with the CEO of Mitsamatsu, and correct the inaccurate news without casting blame. There is no doubt that whichever the decision I make will ultimately effects the shareholders. However, it would beneficial in all aspects to join Mitsamatsu company if they are truly a legit corporation; it could also have a very negative effect if the accusation are true.Joint venture with Mitsamatsu with profit shareholders if it is a legit company, but if indeed the accusation is true, it could compromise the U. S. -based corporation for the worse. I would first hold off on any commitments until all the details are on the table and there is clear evidence there are no illegal and/or immoral activities taking place. A meeting with the appropriate officials would definitely be the agenda and once clarifications are made, the appropriate decisions could be acted upon. Not only the shareholders will be affected with the decision, it will also directly affect the employees of the U.S. corporation. Without clarification with evidence the employees would suffer anxiety and depression, also feel in a state of instability, because their future would depend on the final decision of the joint venture. If joint venture is legit and processed, it could mean more jobs and even expanded opportunities for advancement of position and pay for the current employees. But if joint venture goes through and indeed the accusations are true and the news hits the markets and the stocks, it could lead to a lot of loss in profits, which would in turn mean more cuts, and loss of jobs.In order to keep employees from going into panic mode and spreading rumors and decreasing productivity and increasing errors, I would set up a temporary department to address the employees needs and to answer all their questions. Also a department relaying up to date information to employees and shareholders would keep everyone at easy and abreast with all the new developments so they do not waste time looking for untrue information elsewhere. The decision could also affect employees in Asia. Joint venture could also mean more jobs in Asia and maybe even higher pay for them and more positions available.If joint venture does not go through and accusation are true, it may mean a lot of employees in that company may end up losing their jobs as well. Even though they may have not been being paid enough; they were still making money to make ends meet and that cut could be detrimental to the employees there as well as their families. They may even get reimbursed for loss or unfair pay in the past if appropriate legal actions can be taken, but some employees live day to day for just even food in outside countries and the delay of income may also affect them negatively.If the joint venture is made there may be opportunities for employees from the US working in ASIA but under unstandardized conditions, which may not be at the best interest of the employees. True, sending employees to Asia will open up more job positions, but it will be very risky if there are no standards set there. A good corporation at the end of the day wants what is best for their shareholders and employees.

Wobbling Pivot
The Wobbling pivot was that there was two men fighting over a bicycle and there were people listening to them in Attainment Square. There was a riot that had happened in China where there was a riot that happened and there were a lot of people protesting for domestic tranquility in Beijing. In the streets of Changing there were people in taxis and most of them that took a ride was businessman and foreigners because the fares prices were very high. There were policeman that were extremely violent or didn't care about their actions about how hey treated people in certain cities and china as a whole was corrupted.For example when some girl had been raped and killed there was no Justice against that and the family pleaded for a trial and they got it but it took a while. Another example is when the girl had got murdered and was raped and she died and the young girl funeral was held but officials said that killing is not a crime. Also there were people trying to fight for their individual rights like people had anger over the unsafe mines and the polluted water that was not safe to drink. There were unsafe working intuitions and endless demands of local officials for bribes and sex privileges.There had been a problem with the farming with the water supplies poisoned and their crops being ruined and there could be rising Incidences of cancer and that was a panic. There were peoples homes destroyed for no apparent reason and If they resisted thousands were fined and even going to Jail some of the time. The main two things that the officials wanted were money and power which they only got If from family or any kind of racial connections. There were many cities that were under attack in China and the people still protested and many were killed and very few police officers.If you broke any laws In China you may have been sentenced to death regarding these protests. There were other things Like Education, public safety; food security and culture were nit high state spendin g priorities but they focused more on passing examinations which meant you were a certain elite status. Some of these civilizations have even taken concrete measures to either abolish or accept prostitution within their system. The ancient Greeks, for example, had a form of regulation policy or law for prostitutes. They treated prostitution as a credible profession, they were subject to the paying of taxes and were even requested to wear distinct clothings so as to be easily distinguished and classified as such. The Roman Catholic Church, during the Middle Ages, even allowed (tolerated) prostitution despite its moral nature and moral laws. They argued that by allowing prostitution, greater crimes against the Church ââ¬â such as sodomy, rape and masturbation ââ¬â can be prevented. A man of the Church during that time even went as far as declaring that the expulsion of prostitution will only give rise to the lustful nature of human beings. à à à à à à à à à à à Looking back through history, it is interesting to note that present societies have changed drastically with regards to their view of prostitution. And this shift in logical thinking can either be considered a major advancement in human moral society or a considerable denial to historical and natural norms and/or an open resistance to societal acceptance. As such, where should one stand on this issue? I, for one, greatly supports the latter. Indeed, I believe that prostitution should be accepted and be made legal in every open society. True, that societies at present have achieved a tremendous amount of success pertaining to moral law and human rights. However, societies must also put into consideration the fact that prostitution, as history may suggest, is a part of human nature. In other words, no matter how regarded as a scourge the act of prostitution is and no matter how much condemnation every government or institution may impose upon it, it ââ¬â the act of prostitution ââ¬â will always be there. Societies can never prevent the act of prostitution from occurring in the same way that human beings can never prevent the occurrence of bad weather ââ¬â its just there. à à à à à à à à à à à As such, I believe that instead of combating such a natural force ââ¬â of which, almost always proved to be a negatively implausible act ââ¬â why not offer acceptance to the norm ââ¬â of which, is more a positively frugal act à and then provide the necessary safety nets for its entrance? à à à à à à à à à à à Indeed, the acceptance (or legalization) of prostitution denotes that proper measures will be taken in addressing the issue, not as a problem, but as a legitimate business. Governments must always understand that disobedience to the law is the result of strict impositions of the law. In other words, in order for governments to obtain the cooperation of these elements (of prostitution), they should should provide these elements with compensation and/or compromise instead of vying for their utter destruction ââ¬â which is, to some extent, ultimately impossible. Government cooperation on the matter (in other words, legalization) could result into proper regulation of laws and services that will stand as a form protection for both legitimate prostitutes and their respective clients (I am using the word legitimate in order to refer to actual prostitutes that were not either forced or trafficked into the profession and the word respective in order to refer to the actual clients that do pay for the services they received and do not, under any circumstances, commit acts of violence against prostitutes). With the full legalization of prostitution comes a new set of laws that will determine the proper guidelines for the conduct of the profession. By doing so, proper health care, disease regulation, protection laws for mistreated parties (prostitute and the client) and other such programs and policies (as will be protected and advanced by the Rule of Law) will be established in order to administer the ever-growing business. Furthermore, other protections such as anti-trafficking laws, underage/minor laws prohibiting the acts, violence against women and others will be improved or amended so as to accommodate the introduction of the former laws established for the concept of legalized prostitution. à à à à à à à à à à à Seeing these benefits to possibly come to life, one may still question, whether or not, moral law and human rights will be compromised in the process. The answer, of course, is a resounding yes. However, one must also understand that moral laws and human rights are only a product of the rational of human intellect. Prostitutes (legitimate) are aware of the fact that what they are doing are a clear violation of moral laws and human rights. Still, they refuse to stop. Why? Because they choose not to uphold these laws and principles. Their rationalization comes from concept of free-will and freedom to exercise ones own body at his or her own discretion. As such, a rational force such as that of morality and humanism can never affect them ââ¬â simply because they choose not be affected. the disease and choice of drug addiction Disease vs. Choice Have you ever battled with the idea that maybe being a drug addict is a disease and not a choice? Or that it is a choice and not a disease? This topic is one of the most controversial subjects to discuss because there are many different opinions when it comes to deciding whether its a disease or choice. Some researchers have taken a stance and reported that drug dependence is a disease while other researchers report it as being a choice. My stance with this, even after researching, is that being a drug addict and or abuse is ultimately a choice. The moment we are born we all are born with free will. The things we choose to do at what ever age or time in our life is a choice. We make our own decisions to either say yes or no. Whenever those boundaries are crossed thats a choice being made. By taking into account a first hand story and interview from a woman that used to be addicted to drugs along with the information presented by researchers on both views of addiction as a brain disease and as a choice, I will argue against drug addiction being labeled a brain disease. In todays society it is almost impossible for anyone to say that they do not know someone who is involved in drugs in some sort of capacity. Some of us may know of someone that is a drug addict, ex- drug addict, or even someone that is contemplating drug use. However, no one gets involved with drugs at any point in time without first choosing to do so. With just that first decision and act of actually using, many people ultimately find themselves addicted to drugs or even drug abusers. Several people dont know that there is a difference in being addicted to drugs and being a drug abuser. Although neither of the two is any better than the other, there is still a difference. According to Drugs, Society, and Human Behavior the thirteenth edition by Carl L. Hart, Charles Ksir, and Oakley Ray, drug addiction is when someone compulsively uses a substance, despite its negative and sometimes dangerous effects. Drug abuse is when someone is using a drug excessively, or for purposes which it was not medically intended (Hart, Ksir, Ray). However, someone can abuse drugs without being addicted but the opposite is not true. It is not possible to be addicted to drugs without abusing them. Once that imaginary line has been crossed that spiral downward begins to take place in ones life unless the individual chooses to not take that path. Drug use, like all other choices, is influenced by preferences and goals. It is not gender specific and affects people of all age groups and economic levels. Continued drug use alters good judgment and leads to other risky behavior such as making a decision to drive a vehicle, have unprotected sex, or participate in activities one would not normally undertake, if not for being under the influence of drugs. Those who are addicted or are abusers fail to fulfill their obligations at school, at work, to friends, and even family members. This is all a familiar scene for Kathy Thomas, a woman that used to be addicted to drugs and now have been clean for twenty- one years. She recalls upon the time when she first tried cocaine. Kathy states in the interview that she had just gotten into a fight with her husband, at that time, and as a result of that fight and how she was feeling she made a choice to let someone easily convince her to try cocaine. Eventually Kathy wanted to try the drug agai n and from there on allowed for her self to become hooked on the drug. She chased that high constantly for two years. Throughout the two years she struggled with the idea of wanting to quit but still wanting to feel that first high again. She remembers inheriting some money from her grandfathers estate and blowing approximately one thousand dollars on cocaine within a matter of twenty-four hours. She became very neglectful towards her kids along with her other responsibilities. Kathy states that the circumstances that lead up to her going into rehab was the scare she received from being involved in a drug raid and realizing that if anything happened to her then she would have no one to care for her kids. Those two things frightened her enough to get clean and remain clean. In the interview with Kathy she was asked if she believes whether drug addiction is a disease or choice. Kathy responded by saying that she believes it is a choice because she was not forced into using drugs and t hat she made those choices to do the drug each and every time while realizing how she and her family were being affected. Ultimately it was something she wanted to do and because of her drug use she allowed for her life to be turned upside down. When asked if she accepts full responsibility for her actions she answered, ââ¬Å"yes, because it would be wrong to actually blame others for my actions or on the idea that it may a brain disease when in the end it was all by choice just as it was my choice to get cleanâ⬠(Thomas). While taking into account real life circumstances from an ex- drug addict on drugs as a choice, lets look into what some researchers have founded. Authors of Drugs, Society, and Human Behavior report that until the 20th century, the most common view was probably that dependent individuals were weak willed, lazy, or immoral, then medical and scientific studies began of users. Through those studies they believed that it seemed as if something more powerful than mere self-indulgence was at work, and the overall view began to be that dependence is a drug induced illness (Hart, Ksir, and Ray 34). But to add insult to it all, Alan Leshner, the former director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health, compares having an addiction, although knowing that it begins with a clear voluntary decision, to that of someone with schizophrenia because they cannot control their hallucinations and delusions as well as to someone that has Parkinson disease because they cannot control their trembling (Leshner). First lets get an understanding of what disease means. Disease is a particular destructive process in an organ or organism, with a specific cause and characteristic symptoms; specifically; an illness or ailment (Webster). With this in mind how can one compare any disease to that of a drug addict? Someone with a heart disease, schizophrenia, Parkinson disease, or any other disease does not choose to wake up one day and say that they want to have their diseases however a drug addict does choose to use drugs. No matter how it ultimately affects the user they were affected because of their choice to use. Jeffrey Schaler, a psychologist and author of Addiction is a Choice, views drug addiction as a choice and is very critical of treatments that ââ¬Å"teachâ⬠patients that they are not in control of their behaviors (Schaler). However, the Drug Addiction Support website states that the person is no longer in control of it and cannot break free of the diseases power and that ââ¬Å"thingâ⬠that says stop isnt there anymore (Drug). If this were true then what about those that voluntarily decide to get clean? And if this were true then we wouldnt have stories like Kathy Thomas. Stanton Peele, a psychologist and source used in the Drugs, Society, and Human Behavior the thirteenth edition, argued that substance dependence does not have many of the same characteristics of some classic medical diseases. He states how we cant X-ray or blood test to reveal the underlying cause or even that there is an underlying cause because all that is present as far as symptoms is excessive involvement. Peele suggests that if substance abuse is a disease then gambling, excessive sexual intercourse, and overeating should also be seen as diseases, but in this sense it demoralizes our normal understanding of the concept of disease. Therefore, stating that substance abuse is like a disease in many ways is ultimately different from insisting that it is a disease (40). Society labeling drug addiction as a brain disease gives drug addicts a way out of taking responsibility for their own actions. My position with this is that they will likely continue to use because they will fall int o the stigma that they use because they have a disease and they cant stop. There are so many things that happen to a human in life that are truly out of our control but unless one is actually held at gunpoint to use drugs then this is one thing that we can control. But even in this scenario if one is forced to use drugs then once free of the torment the victim ultimately has a choice of continuing to use or to quit. Schaler believes that most of the drug addicts resort to using drugs because of problems in their life that they are trying to run away from. Therefore, if one brings forth their problems that they are trying so hard to avoid and learn different ways of coping with them then they are more likely to have a successful outcome (Schaler). The Drug Addiction Support group suggests that whatever the drug of choice, intervention and treatment are necessary for addicts to return to a healthy lifestyle (Drug). When looking back into Kathys story and interview she expressed that there are factors that a drug addict needs to put in place in order to remain clean and drug free. She stated how she had to make choices to change the type of people she hung out with, the type of places she went to, and the things that she did that lead her to use drugs (Thomas). In summary using drugs is a willful commitment or dedication, just like joining an exercising club or committing your self to complete a college education. While heavy consumption of drugs is often foolish and self-destructive, it is still a matter of personal choice. Drug dependence has no specific preference on which person is affected. Bad people are drug addicts, weak people, good people, nice people, well-educated people, the blue collar, the rich, and the poor. People decide their own fate when it comes to drug usage. Labeling drug addicts as having a brain disease is not fair to those that truly do have diseases and made no choice to contain their conditions. Those that are addicted to drugs need to accept responsibility for their choices. Every single time someone picks up drugs and does them then they are choosing to do so. No one else chooses that for them. Those that have successfully gotten themselves into a treatment center or sought other ways of rehabilitating themselv es have done so because they chose to. Just as well, when one relapses it is because they chose to go and use drugs again. Once it is understood that drug addicts are choosing to do drugs and that it is not some ââ¬Å"forceâ⬠keeping them from stopping then maybe there will be more drug addicts taking responsibility for their action. However it may be, I will still hold my stance in saying that being a drug addict and or abuser is still a choice.

There are many different views on whether or not business should be regulated during the Guilded Age. The rich who controlled the government at the time were against any kind of regulation of business. They wanted one hundred percent capitalism. The workers on the other hand wanted the business to be regulated, and the legalization of unions. I am going to support the ideas of the business owners. à à à à à There were many wealthy business owners who believed in the gospel of wealth. This was the idea that God made the rich rich and the poor poor. This was a common thought process of the Guilded Age. Andrew Carnegie was a major follower of this thought. This is shown in his speech ââ¬Å"Wealth.â⬠In this speech he says that rich and poor are necessary for the race. It also describes how it is survival of the fittest. The ideas of the gospel of wealth are a scary concept today. If you look at it with a revisionist viewpoint the idea that rich are rich because God said so leaves us open for so much discrimination. The thoughts of this time were not able to see this, and the business owners wanted to keep the power in their hands. Document E also has a touch gospel of wealth in it. It talks about a preacher telling his parishioners to go out and make money. It says that it is the personââ¬â¢s job to go out and become rich. It also talks about how the rich are the most honest of all people. That because they have money you are the least likely to lie because you donââ¬â¢t have too. Many people of the era said that the money would be there even if the rich werenââ¬â¢t there, but Document G contradicts this idea.

A report into how ICT has had an impact on an individuals working and personnel life For this report I decided to ask my mum how her life has changed since computers became involved daily in life. I wrote 10 questions each with questions incorporated to get a wide view on how it has had had an impact on her life. I asked my mum 'when did you first use a computer, and was it at the workplace or at home?' she answered 'I first used a computer at work because it was part of my new job' I then asked if she went on a course to help learn new skills and did she find it useful as follow up questions. She replied ' no, I wasn't given the opportunity to go on a course I simply had to teach myself it would have been a lot better if I had been on a course though. I then wanted to find out if she was comfortable about using ICT and if she was confident with it. I asked 'Was ICT a big change for you which you didn't really want to take because you found it intimidating, or did you relish the thought of learning new skills?' she answered ' yes I found it extremely intimidating as everyone else in my office new how to work a computer and I felt left behind. People also thought that because they knew I should so I found it very stressful' Next I wanted to know how much exactly had ICT changed her working life I asked if it had and she answered 'after a long time I have started to enjoy using the computer and I find it very useful At work Health and safety is a crucial part of a working place and regulations must be taken seriously so I asked 'how do you solve problems to do with health and safety? Are there any issues you feel strongly about and feel something should be done?' she replied 'I believe health and safety is very important and my workplace feels the same and are keen to address and problems'. I then wanted to know 'if any health and safety issues affected her personally on an everyday basis and what was done about them?' she replied ' no I don't have any they affect me on a day to day basis' Next I wanted to know how ICT helped her at home if it did at all. Explore how the parent child relationship is presented in ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"praise song for my motherâ⬠and comment on the feeling expressed in both poems Introduction Both ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"praise song for my motherâ⬠focus on parent child relationships. ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠is a poem that tells a story about a little boy who falls into some nettles, and ââ¬Å"praise song for my motherâ⬠is a poem that displays love and praise for someoneââ¬â¢s mother. However both poems show the feelings of both the parents and the children. The poem ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠is a very strait forward poem and its main focus lays on one incident, which tells the story of a young boy who falls into a bed of nettles and his dad protects him. However ââ¬Å"praise song for my motherâ⬠is completely different itââ¬â¢s more general than strait forward and each verse lists another reason why she loves her mother. Also ââ¬Å"praise song for my motherâ⬠includes lots of metaphorââ¬â¢s and word play where as ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠just tells the story how it is. Both ââ¬Å"Nettlesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Praise song for my motherâ⬠include lots of imagery. ââ¬Å"Nettlesâ⬠incorporates a theme of war and military the nettles that hurt the poetââ¬â¢s son are referred to as ââ¬Å"green spearsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"that regiment of spiteâ⬠this is strange as although nettles can cause irritation and sharp pain, they are not forceful like weapons used in war. The father finds it unbearable that his son has been hurt. Therefore he has a need to protect him and to prevent it from occurring again. The war imagery also suggests that the poet had been in the war or experienced what war was like. And in ââ¬Å"Praise song for my motherâ⬠there is a consistent use of metaphorââ¬â¢s many of which include nature ââ¬Å"you were the moons eye to meâ⬠and ââ¬Å"you were sunrise to meâ⬠are just two of many used. In ââ¬Å"praise song for my motherâ⬠the structure is very well noticed, the first stanza starts off with two s yllables on the first line ââ¬Å"you wereâ⬠then go on to use four syllables ââ¬Å"sunrise to meâ⬠, then generally it goes to six or seven ââ¬Å"deep and bold and fathomingâ⬠. And the first three stanzas are very similar in ways of structure they all use the same number of syllables and look very similar in the way that they appear. However the final section marks a break in the chain as it changes the structure pattern, ââ¬Å"praise song for my motherâ⬠is very ambiguous and depending on which way you interpret it this could mean the daughter is moving away from childhood into adulthood. However in ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠it is very simple it has an easy rhyme scheme of AbAb, ââ¬Å"bed, shedâ⬠à and ââ¬Å"tears, spearsâ⬠. And is also written in iambic pentameter witch is a collection of two syllables one stressed and on unstressed. The poem ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠has 16 lines which is very similar to sonnet form, a sonnet has 14 lines. The language in ââ¬Å"praise song for my motherâ⬠is very different from ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠. In ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠it is very simple and easy to understand although it probably has ambiguous meanings you can read it and understand it because it is simply telling a story. But in ââ¬Å"praise song for my mother ââ¬Å"is a lot different the context is a lot harder to understand and has several ambiguous meanings so you can interpret it different ways. It also is confusing as it includes made up words such as ââ¬Å"matelingâ⬠witch make you think poems give the readers can be different for everyone , but for me I like the idea in ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠of the father wanting to protect his son as this shows love to his son. I also like ââ¬Å"praise song for my motherâ⬠because it has many hidden ambiguous meanings so you can interpret it many ways I also like ââ¬Å"praise song for my motherâ⬠because it isnââ¬â¢t just simple and easy to understand it has hidden meanings and made up words so you have to take it apart and analysis it which requires a lot of thinking. I like the imagery in both ââ¬Å"â⬠praise song for my motherâ⬠and ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠as it gives you a clear image of what the poets are thinking when writing the poem. However I prefer ââ¬Å"nettlesâ⬠to ââ¬Å"praise song for my motherâ⬠because it requires less thinking it is simple and understandable at first glance.

Carnival Corporation as the largest cruise line in the world is being a leader and innovator in the cruise line industry. Many of the onboard activities and services were introduced to strengthen the competencies between competitors. The challenges of the Carnival were being overcome by the management with creative and innovative strategies. As a corporate entity, Carnival did not refuse to withdraw money to settle the ocean pollution charged by public. The expansions of cruise line market via acquisition of a few subsidiaries dominate the cruise line in the world. 1. Strengths (internal factors) First, the largest cruise line in the world, as the leader and innovator in the cruise industry (growth from two converted ocean liners into an organization with multiples cruise lines). Second, the belief of management and Board of Directors that the company will grows better. It motivates the employees to work hard. Third, internal grow in term of vessels that approximately ten vessels are under construction. Fourth, employees loyalty (the longest period employees remain in this organization is around eight years) because Carnival management treating well to their employees in terms of wages). Fifth, creative and innovative corporate officers that is ready to face challenges. Sixth, Carnival has operational experience and economic of scales that causing them to have lowest break even point in the same industry. Weaknesses First, in 1972, the speed of ship was slow. Second, the long-term debt within 1999 and 2001 is increased (the payback of debt may lower the revenue and thus decreasing the dividend payment for shareholders). Third, the expand market (business) of Carnival causing the difficulty in managing the business. Fourth, reducing on net income in 2001 is because of higher costs and expenses. 2. Opportunities (external factors) First, the expansion through acquisition can reduce the competitors in same industry and has the ability to compete with other competitors (lower advertising costs). Second, collaboration with travel agents can promote cruises. Third, the industry is expected to have bright future in passengers, consolidation through mergers, buyout, and smaller cruise operator failure, and the expansion of the industry worldwide. Fourth, expand of target customers from older people to younger people. Fifth, expand of onboard activities (casino, disco, and nightclub). Threats First, terrorist events that were happen in 11 September 2001. Second, negative publicity in 2002 where Carnival subjected by the ocean pollution charges and ââ¬Å"Norwalk-likeâ⬠virus that affect the cruise industry. Third, the increased of fuel costs and airline costs that affect the industry. Fourth, the failure of Carnival discontinued operations of Fiesta marina Lines that affect the company image. Fifth, Persian Gulf War that was increased competitors in the cruise industry especially in Caribbean area. Sixth, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines had institute a major shipbuilding program that challenges Carnival. The emergence of Walt Disney Company in the cruise market; and the prospect of new ships on the horizon give impact to the ââ¬Å"familyâ⬠cruise vacation segment. 3. Core competencies Yes, Carnival has core competencies because it is the competency crosses divisional boundaries, Carnival can do exceedingly well, and must continuously reinvest in it: i) Adding diversion onboard ââ¬â such as disco, nightclubs, casino, and others. Carnival also tries to attract younger cruisers by providing vacation package that included airfare to the port of embarkation and home after the cruise. ii) Product positioning ââ¬â Carnival believes that cruise market comprised to three segments (contemporary, premium, luxury) with different passenger demographics, characteristics, and growth requirements. iii) Travel agents ââ¬â collaborate with travel agents to promote cruises. Carnival also training travel agents from nonaffiliated travel firm to sell cruises. 4. Distinctive competencies Yes, Carnival has distinctive competencies because distinctive competency is the superior to those of the competitions and difficult for competitors to compete with Carnival: i) Investment in new ships ââ¬â Carnival is expanding its internal growth by investing in new ships. It is difficult for other competitors to invest in these large numbers of ships in same period but Carnival can do. ii) External expansion through acquisitions ââ¬â Carnival has five subsidiaries that control the major cruise lines in different countries. What trends are emerging in cruise industry?à i) The adding diversion onboard such as planned activities, disco, nightclubs, casino, and other forms of entertainment activities (different kinds of activities that suitable for different ages of target customers). ii) Moderate priced vacation for younger cruisers that included airfare to the port of embarkation and home after the cruise. iii) All inclusive packages that began with bags were tagged for the ship at the airport, air-conditioned bus, meals, onboard activities, house keeping service, until passengers were transported back to airport. iv) Love story movie such as ââ¬Å"Titanicâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Love boatâ⬠that promote the romance onboard encouraging couples to join cruise. 6. Marketing strategy i) Price ââ¬â moderate price (vacation packages) that middle-class clients afford to pay. Prices for different levels of rooms are charged according to the customers needs. ii) Product ââ¬â vacation package that suitable for the clients aged. Other onboard activities such as casino and disco. The service from picking up the clients at airport to board and dropping clients again at airport. iii) Place ââ¬â Caribbean ports and other destination such as Walt Disney World, Holland, and Costa, as long as the clients want to go. iv) Promotion ââ¬â some of the promotions are done by travel agents. The ââ¬Å"Fun Shipâ⬠cruise that with designated shipboard party and everyone is welcomed by Carnival is another success promotion. 7. The importance of travel agents The travel agents will help Carnival to promote the cruises as an alternative to Disney or European vacation. For people who never take a cruise in their life, or afraid of taking a flight to the destinations will be attracted. Thus, it shows that the important role of travel agents to Carnival. Besides that, not only attracting clients to take a cruise as the core business, selling cruise is also part of the Carnival business. Thus, Carnival is training travel agents from nonaffiliated travel firms to sell cruise. Because of the attractive benefit in term of money provided by Carnival, in year 2000, Carnival took reservations from about 29000 travel agencies to promote the business. And, it proves that this strategy in promoting cruises either to attract clients boarding the cruise or selling the cruise is succeed. 8. Flight or cruise? We will choose cruise because we have not travel yet to some where by cruise before. i) In our opinion, although the price for a cruise might be higher a bit than to take a flight to Caribbean island that we can afford to pay. By choosing a package for the cruising is worth because there will be variety of services that suitable for us as active younger cruisers rather than just to sit in the flight and we have nothing to do. ii) Even though cruise may take a longer time to reach Caribbean island, the final destination that we will reach is Caribbean island no matter we take a cruise or flight. Thus, we can enjoy the onboard facilities that we have paid for. Disco, nightclubs, gym room, cinema, and casino are the places that we seldom go for but we can enjoy if we take a cruise for this vacation. iii) Cruise is a place that we can relax ourselves since the purpose of travel is to relax our mind. The sea view from a ship can make us happy and reduce our stress. On the other hand, we c an also meet some new friends through this trip. iv) Besides, we can experience some exotic destinations when the cruise will sail in the ports. The cruisers can come down from the vessel and visit some famous spots. Adversely, if we take flight, we canââ¬â¢t visit anywhere except just transit in airport. 9. Evaluation of Carnivalââ¬â¢s targeting to specific target market i) Contemporary segment ââ¬â served by Carnival ships, featured a casual ambiance. ii) Premium segment ââ¬â served by Holland America, for longer market and appealed to more affluent consumers iii) Luxury segment ââ¬â served by Seabourn and Cunard, catered to experience cruisers. The above are the target market for Carnival. Each segment has different types of costs to be charged to consumers. For the contemporary segment, it is more suitable for family and people who need relaxing during a short period of holidays. The price is cheaper than premium or luxury segment. For the premium segment, it is more suitable for affluent consumers, who need a longer period to relax. It normally targets an older people to board because the facilities in the ship are more suitable for their ages. This segment of cruise will have more cabin or public space per person. In term of price, it is the most expensive and little people can afford to pay. The price for this segment is higher than contemporary segment. Not everyone will prefer this segment of cruise because they need to consider the available time for taking the cruise. The luxury segment targets for extremely rich consumers where they were served as ââ¬Å"kingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"queenâ⬠in the ship. The consumers who taking this segment of cruise can show that they have a higher social status and prestige is the main consider by consumers. 10. Strategic management in Carnival Carnival has a very unique and successful strategic management in cruise industry. During terrorist events in 2001, the world cruise industry was negatively impact by it. However, to overcome this problem, Carnival offered a deep discount to lure back the passengers. In year 2002, Carnival was subjected to the ocean pollution charges. The company was withdrawing $18 million to overcome this issue. This strategy is not only to overcome the issue ethically but also to maintain the company image. Carnival is doing well in pricing strategy where they offer different kinds of packages with moderate price for different kinds of customers. To improve the core competency of the company, Carnival tried to increase the services onboard and adding diversions onboard. Even though other cruise company can imitate this strategy but Carnival is the first to invent the same strategy that succeeds to gain revenue from it. Carnival tried to introduce new strategy to make more convenience to consumers such as the ââ¬Å"all-inclusive packageâ⬠. The main purpose of this strategy is to maximize the satisfaction of consumers on Carnival services. Finally, to reduce the competition in cruise industry and to compete with other competitors in the same industry, Carnival did acquisition on many cruise lines as subsidiaries. The expansion of Carnival in cruise line market through acquisition can tighten the status of Carnival in cruise industry. 11. The advantage of being a CFC The individuals (foreigners or locals) who held the stocks of Carnival under the CFC status are incorporation exempt shipping operations of United States persons from income tax. Carnival with all of its income (except of United State source of income from transportation, hotel and tour business of Holland America) would be exempt from United State federal income taxes at the corporate level. This exemption not only can increase the revenue of Carnival, it also allows the company to have more funds (liquidation assets) to run more projects or activities for the company. The reason of government to give exemption to Carnival is because to encourage this industry to growth and attract more passengers boarding on ship, especially the ship with casino. It will increase the government sources of money. 12. How to maintain low costs, high level of service? i) Vertical integration or outsourcing ââ¬â Carnival can try to produce in-house or outsource the products or services in related industries such as shipbuilding, meal preparation industry, and transportation (bus). This is because either vertical integration or outsourcing, which contributes the lowest cost, will be the choice of Carnival to either produce in-house or to outsource the needs. The good relation with suppliers can guarantee the best quality of the products or services. Conclusion The success of Carnival is depends on the innovative Board of Directors and management. The growth of cruise market becomes more significant because of the low fares high quality of service. Carnival is dominating the cruise line market but they still do investment in improving the services so that to avoid the core competencies become the weaknesses of the company. Even though the net profit of year 2001 is decreased but it did not mean that they have weak internal control. External factors such as increased in fuel cost also are considered the factor in the declining profit. Finally, Carnival has the potential to grow in cruise line market because they already gained the experience in cruise line and they have strong financial to support many cruise activities.
